MELODIC TORMENT - 2001 RELEASE
Based on Serapha's First-Published Poem, Melodic Torment, the Song that Never Ends

Laurina's second release, Melodic Torment is a collection of songs reminiscent of fine piano concertos and modern day pop. The blend of pop and opera vocals is very interesting and I'm sure, like nothing you've ever heard. The CD is a combination of classical, opera, pop & techno styles of music and includes several magnificent instrumentals. The title track Melodic Torment is based on Serapha's first-published poem, Melodic Torment, the Song that Never Ends.

Serapha wrote the poem several years ago, and to this day remains a favorite among her readers. The poem is based on the life of a pschisophrenic who is tormented mentally. He sees no escape, all he would like is to gain his sanity back.

The CD features 22 tracks and combines several styles of music.

Melodic Torment
Serapha wrote music to match these chilling, poetic lyrics. The music and lyrics blend beautifully. The piece begins with a howelling wind, which was created using a penny whistle originally designed in 1843 and crafted in England. A whispering voice can be heard in the wind, a delicate, eerie piano fades in, and enter the strong, bold sound of the strings. The vocals are somber and moody sung overwhelmingly in a lower key. This song will send you plummenting into the twisted world of a pschisophrenic. It will induce strong images, leave you with a distinct feeling and much to ponder.   Click here to listen to a sample.

Chains of Purgatory
The CD begins with Chains of Purgatory. The cold sound of rattling chains is heard throughout the song. Voices crying in all directions--sounding confused and distressed, trying to escape from the chains that surround them.

Musically, the strongest piece in this song is the voice. The many voices form a despondent, musical chant that mix perfectly with the strings. The piece ends with the chains fading in the distance, the feeling of a spirit left wandering.   Click here to listen to a sample.

Mirage
Mirage, written by Laurina, is a pop-techno song with slight opera-esque vocals. The song boasts a catchy tune and vocals!   Click here to listen to a sample.

Sympathy
Instrumental written by Serapha   Click here to listen to a sample.

Snow Queen
The Snow Queen is a song about repeated drug abuse and its dangers. The song has a pop feel to it. Snow Queen is a poem that Serapha later wrote music for. The song is also remixed into a pop-techno track.    Click here to listen to a sample.

Snow Queen Remix
This remix was created by both Laurina and Serapha. Spoken word along with the original vocals are mixed into a techno beat. The song is remixed at a faster tempo--a classic pop-techno tune.   Click here to listen to a sample.

Winter's Tears
Have you ever been in a cemetery in the winter and watched the snow falling? It would almost seem as if the falling snow were frozen teardrops dropping from the heavens for all who have passed. There is a quiet, eerie, peaceful silence. This mood is replicated splendidly in Winter's Tears written by Serapha. It is an emotional, chilling piece. Saddend voices can be heard in the distance. There are no lyrics, but there are vocals blended into the pianos and strings. This is a haunting song with a meloncholy feel.   Click here to listen to a sample.

Alive
Alive is a slower pop song with strong pop vocals. A song about depression, Alive's lyrics ultimately send the message that nothing is too overwhelming and that you will indeed survive all your troubles.   Click here to listen to a sample.

Nightmares
Laurina wrote the music and lyrics for this track. Inspired by a long string of horrible, vivid nightmares, Laurina decided to transform her dreams into a song. What made these nightmares so interesting is that they somehow crept their way in to her normal dreams, pulling her out of her normal dream state and placing her into the nightmares. At times her nightmares were so lucid she could not tell if they were dreams or reality.

She would awaken suddenly from these nightmares several times throughout the night, sit straight up and stare at an antique chair in the corner of her room (for no apparent reason)--of course there was never anything there. She couldn't help feel, however, that there was a presence of some sort around her, as if there were someone else in the room with her who was intentionally waking her up for some specific reason. But of course, when she awoke, there was no one in the room, or on the chair for that matter.

A few weeks into these nightmares, Laurina's three year old neice was playing in Laurina's bedroom. Laurina and Serapha were both in there with her. Her neice stopped playing suddenly and said "uh oh it's here," her eyes were following something. Their neice (who began speaking at an early age was already very articulate) began to describe clearly and in great detail what she was seeing emerge in front of her. Whispering softly, as if to herself, she stated that she saw several lights hovering above the antique chair. She then described a black puff of smoke that began forming into a face, "I see the face," she whispered. Finally the shadowy figure landed and sat in the chair.

Both Laurina and Serapha saw nothing and kept trying to convince their little neice that there was nothing there. Laurina, determined to convince her of this, took her by the hand and began to walk with her toward the chair telling her there was nothing there. They slowly walked a few inches towards the chair and then suddenly their little neice decided she would go no further as she was too frightened.

Instantly Laurina remembered when her neice first began speaking, that she would walk into Laurina's bedroom point to the chair and say "ghost." Of course no one really paid any attention to this and it probably would have been forgotten except for the fact that it was odd that she would know how to say the word ghost as her vocabulary was still very limited (ma ma, da da, ghost...hm). No one had taught her that word and her mother couldn't imagine where she had picked it up. At that point Laurina was indeed convinced that her neice was looking at something sitting on her antique chair as her eyes were firmly focused on it. When their neice speaks of this experience, she refers to the black, shadowy figure as the "black cat" (eeeek!!).

The nightmares stopped for a period of time but later returned. Although less than before, she does continue to have these incredible dreams!

The music in this piece is extremely moody and descriptive, vocals are strong and expressive in tone. The screams are bone chilling! The instruments show an unsettled panic--music and vocals blend brilliantly!   Click here to listen to a sample.

Find a Way
An upbeat, pop style song with a feeling that together we are stronger and there is nothing that cannot be accomplished. A very uplifting song!   Click here to listen to a sample.

Simple
This is a quaint song about the simple things in life and how they should be appreciated. The song has a mystical, fairytale feel with delicate vocals and pianos. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of brilliantly colored rainbows after a refreshing spring shower, crystal blue skies and cotton-like clouds.   Click here to listen to a sample.

Last Train
Instrumental written by Serapha   Click here to listen to a sample.

City Life
City Life is slightly different from Laurina's usual style. This song boasts about feeling like a star in the middle of a grand city where there's lots to do and lots of fun to have. The ubeat tone and drums give the song a feeling of movement. This is one of the faster, upbeat pop-style songs, which was also remixed adding a techno flare to it.   Click here to listen to a sample.

City Life Remix

Dorme
The music for Dorme was written by Serapha and the lyrics by Laurina. It is written and sung in Italian. The pianos are simple and delicate, vocals are operatic--a short, quaint little tune.    Click here to listen to a sample.

Corn Fields
Instrumental written by Serapha   Click here to listen to a sample.

Time
The track Time has only one repeating lyric--"Time approaches from the other side"--what is time like in heaven? This is a song about the passage of time in a spiritual sense. Is the passage of time similar to what we are accustomed to, or does time have no significance? The music is everchanging, at times even distorted, showing movement (representing the change of times). The music is very unstable, while the vocals are very stable (with only one repeating lyric). This is a pop song and incorporates strings as well as a techno beat (at a slower tempo). The music was created and mixed by Serapha, and the lyrics were written by Laurina.   Click here to listen to a sample.
